Assoc. Prof. Erdem Kabadayı

Primary area of focus: History

Research Summary: M. Erdem Kabadayı earned his PhD from the University of Munich in 2008. Until 2005, Kabadayı has mainly worked on economic, financial and labour history of the Ottoman Empire. Since October 2016, he is the principle investigator of the UrbanOccupationsOETR (urbanoccupations.edu.tr), an ERC Starting Grant Research Project centered at Koç University. Currently, he is pursuing his academic career further as an economic historian specialising on the Ottoman Empire with a particular focus on Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey.

 

Assoc.Prof. Erdem Yörük

Primary area of focus: Sociology

Research Summary: Erdem Yörük is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Koç University and an Associate Member in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention at University of Oxford. He is also a member of Young Academy of Europe and an associate editor of European Review. He holds a PhD from the Department of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University (2012), an MA in Sociology and a BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Boğaziçi University. His work focuses on social welfare and social policy, social movements, political sociology, and comparative and historical sociology. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Ford Foundation, European Commission Marie Curie CIG, European Research Council and the Science Academy of Turkey BAGEP. His articles have appeared in Politics & SocietyNew Left ReviewCurrent SociologySouth Atlantic Quarterly and International Journal of Communication.

 

Assoc.Prof. Ergin Bulut

Primary area of focus: Media and Visual Arts

Research summary: Ergin Bulut received his PhD from the Institute of Communication Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign His research interests cover political economy of culture and communication, media labor, development and international communication, philosophy of technology, cultural studies and video game studies. Ergin’s writings have appeared in journals such as TV and New Media, Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies, and British Journal of Sociology of Education. Ergin is the co-editor of Cognitive Capitalism, Education, and Digital Laborwhich it was published in Turkish with the initiative of Notabene Yayınları. As part of SSRC’s Inter-Asia Initiative, Ergin is collaborating with scholars across the world on the theme ‘Media, Activism, and the New Political’.

 

Assoc.Prof. Lemi Baruh

Primary area of focus: Media and Visual Arts

Research summary: After graduating from Koç University Business Administration department, Dr. Baruh continued his post-graduate and doctoral degrees at University of Pennsylvania, Annenberg School for Communication. Between the years 2006 and 2007, Baruh worked in market research in the US and provided research and consulting services for firms including USA TODAY, VMWare, Johnson & Johnson. He was an Assistant Professor at Kadir Has University, Faculty of Communications- Advertising Department between 2007 and 2010. In 2010, he worked as the Department Head of Communication Design department. He was awarded the TÜBA- GEBİP in 2011, in communication field. Baruh is an editorial board member of Journal of Communication and an subeditor of International Journal of Interactive Communication Systems and Technologies. Books Lemi Baruh contributed as a writer include: “If It Was Not For Terrorism: Crisis, Compromise, and Elite Discourse in the Age of “War on Terror” ; “Reel Politics: Reality Television as a Platform for Political Discourse. Newcastle”; “Değişen İletişim Ortamında Etkileşimli Pazarlama” (Interactive Marketing in a Changing Communication Environment)

 

Assist. Prof. David Carlson

Primary area of focus: International Relations

Research summary: David Carlson’s research predominantly involves political methodology, with an interest in comparative politics and international political economy. He received his PhD from the Department of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis, under the advisement of Jacob M. Montgomery. His current projects involve the implementation of machine learning algorithms for prediction and inference in political science.

 

Assist. Prof. Gizem Erdem Gürel

Primary area of focus: Psychology

Research summary: Gizem Erdem Gürel is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Koç University​ and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She was a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago (US) in 2014. She was a visiting scholar at CMES and CeASAR at Harvard University (US) in Summer 2017 and in the Department of Social and Organizational Psychology at ISCTE University Institute Lisbon (Portugal) in Summer 2018. She completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at the Ohio State University and her B.A. in the Department of Psychology at Bogaziçi University. She received several research awards in her career, including 2019 Science Academy Young Scientist Award (BAGEP) in Turkey and 2018 NCFR President for-a-day award in the US. Her research interests are program evaluation of preventive and treatment interventions targeting at-risk youth and their families. She is particularly interested in youth mentoring and evidence-based family therapy in the treatment of substance use, juvenile delinquency, and relational problems.

 

Assist. Prof. Güneş Ertan

Primary area of focus: International Relations

Research summary: Dr. Gunes Ertan is an Assistant Professor of International Affairs at Koç University. She received her Ph.D. from Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at University of Pittsburgh in 2013 with a specialization on Public Policy.

 

Assist. Prof. Merih Angın

Primary area of focus: International Relations

Research summary: Dr. Angın received her PhD in International Relations/ Political Science from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID). Her research interests include International Political Economy, International Organizations, International Development, IMF, World Bank, SOE Privatizations, Investment Arbitration, Quantitative Methods, Agent-Based Modelling, Computational Simulation, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence.

 

Assist. Prof. Nergis Dolcerocca

Primary area of focus: Comparative Literature

Research summary: Dr. Dolcerocca is an received her doctoral degree in Comparative Literature from New York University in 2016. She is the editor of the special issue entitled “Beyond World Literature: Reading Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Today,” which appeared in the journal of Middle Eastern Literatures in 2017. Her most recent articles “Free Spirited Clocks: Tanpınar’s Modernism and Time Regulation Institute,” and “Chronometrics in the Modern Metropolis: The City, the Past and Collective Memory in A.H. Tanpınar,” were published in Modern Language Notes.

 

Dr. Ali Hürriyetoğlu

Primary area of focus: Computational Linguistics

Research summary: Dr. Hürriyetoğlu is a researcher working on textual event information processing in various languages. His focus is on finding relevant information in document collections by applying detailed language analysis and machine learning techniques. He has been working in industrial, academic, governmental, and international projects to apply and to improve his expertise.
