Overview

Murat Demirci is an applied microeconomist with a particular focus on the economics of migration and education. Dr. Demirci obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Virginia in 2017. Upon graduation, he joined the faculty at Koç University. He has BA degrees in Economics and Business Administration from Boğaziçi University.

Dr. Demirci’s research explores various dimensions of high-skill migration and international student mobility, refugee migration, and human capital issues in developing countries. His work analyzes the effects of visa policies and political populism on international student mobility, the labor-market and education effects of immigration, the integration of refugees in terms of employment and child health outcomes, the cyclicality of school enrollment, and the determinants of early childhood development. Dr. Demirci’s work has been published in various journals, including the European Economic Review, World Development, and Journal of Comparative Economics. He has received the AERA dissertation grant from NSF and the career start grant from TUBITAK. He has been teaching econometrics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He also delivers training sessions on the impact evaluation and causal estimation techniques in policy institutions.
